It's based on the needs of cells!

After 25 years of upgrading a wide variety of common incubators, glove boxes, hoods and other conventional equipment with all sorts of custom accessories and retrofits, we suddenly realized there was a common thread. Most of these upgrades were to meet unmet cellular needs. It then became apparent something new and better was necessary and possible.  Rethinking, redesigning, reinventing from the perspective of cells, a completely new concept in cell incubation and processing system emerged. It's called the Xvivo System. It bypasses all the handicaps inherent in conventional cell equipment designed for people. It's not like any other cell incubation and processing equipment. >

Cytocentric Principles are based on old and new knowledge about the needs of cells. Some of the new knowledge is currently unfolding and not yet published. Some is recently published but not yet filtered out into the general awareness.  However, in some aspects, our new approach to cell incubation and processing is simply a more strict and disciplined approach based on old knowledge about cells. Somehow, this knowledge has become disregarded and even forgotten after decades of putting up with growing and handling cells in equipment designed for people instead of cells!

Cells Need Full Time Protection ... Not Part Time.

Cells need Full Time Protection

Cells outside the body no longer have an immune system to protect them from microbes. Conventional equipment only provides part-time protection. The Xvivo System is the only incubation and processing system designed to completely and totally isolate cells (possibly forever?) inside an aseptic micro-environment. Isolation protects them from microbes that are rampant in the human world. This protection is fully scalable, from the smallest, simplest, single incubator, single hood, benchtop Xvivo System, to the largest Xvivo Cell Production Facility. In fact, an entire lab can go inside the Xvivo System. That can include unlimited incubation chambers, unlimited interconnected hoods, and all processing equipment as well (microscopes, centrifuges, sorters, separators, readers, robots, etc.). All incubation, all manual processing, and all automated processing takes place inside the system…protected.


Cells Need Full Time Optimization ... Not Part Time


Cells outside the body no longer have the body to keep them warm and cozy. Temperature, pH, osmolarity, O2, etc. must be kept at optimal levels outside the body or cells die. Conventional equipment only provides part time optimization, only inside incubators when they are closed, or inside bioreactors. The Xvivo System is the only system designed to provide constant continuous control and optimization of all critical variables outside the body continuously, forever! Not just during incubation but during all manual and automated processing as well. All incubators and bioreactors open only into closed hoods with identical conditions, providing continuous uninterrupted optimization. Optional transport chambers also keep conditions intact when cells move to remote locations.


Cells Need Physiologic Simulation ... Not Air.

Pericellular DissolvedConventional equipment leaves huge gaps in physiologic simulation. Oxygen is the best example. In conventional equipment oxygen is taken for granted, widely misunderstood, and typically mishandled. However oxygen concentration is now known to be an absolutely fundamental cell parameter, and plays a critical newly discovered role in gene expression. Cells inside the body never see oxygen levels as high as air oxygen. Physiologic levels are much lower, and they do not fluctuate in the body. Pericellular dissolved oxygen is the important parameter, but poor equilibration between gas and liquid in culture makes oxygen control extremely challenging. Conventional equipment does not account for pericellular oxygen in any way, and allows it to fluctuate unknowingly. The Xvivo System is the only comprehensive incubation and processing option with the capacity to definitively keep pericellular oxygen at physiologic levels without random fluctuations in any protocol. It's also the only system that can provide physiologic simulation of the newly discovered gasotransmitters NO, CO, O3, and H2S. Conventional equipment does not account for these at all.


Cells Need Dynamics

Dynamic ConditionsCell cultures are essentially dynamic in nature, not static. They grow over time. Their metabolic rate can change over time. Conventional incubators only provide static conditions. The Xvivo System is the only incubation system with dynamic control options for all variables in all incubation chambers. Plus, each integrated processing chamber has identical control parameters to replicate the conditions of each incubator just before that incubator is opened, regardless of the dynamic.  


Cells Need Protocol

ProtocolDifferent cell culture protocols require different conditions. Conventional equipment forces all protocols into monolithic incubator chambers with one size fits all and one set of conditions, regardless of protocol differences. The Xvivo System is designed to accommodate any and all protocols, large or small, simple or complex, simultaneously. Instead of one common monolithic set of conditions, cells can have whatever conditions they need at the same time that other cultures are provided different conditions that they need. The unique modular integrated co-chamber/subchamber design can accommodate unlimited numbers of diverse protocols simultaneously.   


Cells Need To Fit

FitsThe Xvivo System is designed with extreme modularity. It can be configured in any number of ways to fit any application, any budget and any space. It can fit along a wall, or around a corner. It can sit on a bench top or stand on the floor. It can be functionally configured to fit any application or any budget. It can then be upgraded as needed, reconfigured as needed, redeployed as needed, moved as needed. There is never a dead-end.   


Cells Need Accountability

AccountabilityCritical conditions that cells experience in conventional equipment are often never known. No one knows how long the cells were outside the incubator, experiencing suboptimal conditions in the hood. No one knows how many times or how long the incubator door was kept open on any particular day, exposing cells to suboptimal conditions. The Xvivo System records everything and can alarm any conditions 24/7.


Cells Need To Protect Their Caretakers


Cells that harbor and release dangerous viruses, vectors, prions, etc. can infect humans. Conventional open hoods and open incubators offer minimal protection, but the Xvivo System isolates and contains the cells and dangerous organisms inside. As yet there is no official BSL (Biological Safety Laboratory) rating since it represents a new and unprecedented category of product, but the closed design unquestionably increases the protection factor by a large degree. Someday the Xvivo System may qualify for a BSL rating somewhere between BSL3 and BSL4. Until then, you cannot use it to replace or substitute for a BSL facility. However, you don’t have to wait for a rating to put it into an existing BSL facility. You can get the extra protection now!
